Everyone loves music. We know that a lot of you love John Legend. So we’re really pleased to tell our premium users in Sweden that this weekend they get the chance to listen to John Legend’s eagerly awaited new album Evolver, including two additional bonus tracks, before it goes on open release next week.

Over the coming weeks and months we’re planning to bring our premium customers even more exclusive pre-release listening opportunities from some of the world greatest artists and working on a whole bunch of other fun stuff that we just can’t wait to share.

We’ve only just begun!

We’ve been looking forward to posting this message for quite some time now. This morning we announced that we have signed groundbreaking licensing deals with a list of companies that include Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, EMI Music, Warner Music Group, Merlin, The Orchard and Bonnier Amigo.

What this means to us, is that after just over two years, thousands of lines of code, and even more cups of coffee, Spotify will launch today. We plan to roll out invites to our free service gradually over the coming months, while premium access to Spotify has now been made fully available.

So what does this mean for our beta test community? Existing accounts will immediately transition to become a free Spotify account. This means that you get to keep all of your playlists. As we have refreshed our database you might find that some music needs to be replaced or is no longer available. We are in the process of uploading lots of freshly licensed music and will continue to scour the globe in our mission to bring you any song you want, so please bear with us.

For those of you who have not yet had a chance to try Spotify, we’ll gradually be releasing more invites to our free service into the wild over the coming months. If you feel you can’t wait, or would prefer to experience Spotify without advertising, it is possible to get ahead of the curve if you buy a premium account.

We really appreciate all of your brilliant support so far and look forward to starting this new stage of the journey.

Office music

Our friends over at Mr Green have posted their corporate playlist for public consumption – and editing! They were quickly followed by PR agency Springtime, posting their disco playlist.

Who’s next? What music is spinning in your office? Dare to share! :)

Moving Spotify

As part of our ongoing work to let more people enjoy Spotify, we have to move our servers to a new and bigger room in the data center where we are located. The server move will start on Friday, September 26, at 0:00 UTC (2:00 CET). Unfortunately that means Spotify will be unavailable while we move them to their new home. We’ll do it as quickly as possible, but it will take at least three hours, maybe longer. Sorry about the inconvenience!

Congratulations, Antoine, and thank you all!

heart.pngGreat to see so many participate in our ad contest, there’s been a lot of creative contributions and I would like to say a thank you to all of you who took the time to send in your answers!

Antoine, our winner got five extra invites, many congrats! We’d like to take the opportunity to give some extra love and attention to Peter for writing the sweetest piece as well. Lots of love.

Here’s Peters very sweet contribution

Unfortunately it’s in Swedish, sorry for this.

  1. Oh Laura - Release me / Saab, måste dessutom betyda det alla väntar på: Att spotify släpps fritt till alla :)
  2. Primal Scream - Give Out But Don’t Give Up måste ju vara ett budskap till alla de vänner jag har som står där utan spotify :)
  3. Donna Summer - Love to love you baby måste betyda hur stor min kärlek är till Spotify, och att jag verkligen älskar att älska spotify :)
Tell me what you saw, tell me what you saw! :)
  14. Det första jag tänker på är helt klart när den färgglada iMacen släpptes då den spelades i reklamen, men jag hoppas samtidigt att ni menar att ni kommer göra Spotify lite mer färgglad :)

Spotify 0.3.3

We just released a new version. Spotify 0.3.3 should help some users who need to use a proxy server to connect to the Internet. If you use a proxy server to access the web, Spotify should automatically detect your settings and just work. Also, for this version:

Login view

  • Settings have been added. You can use the spotify:config URI as a short cut
  • An updated buffer size tuning algorithm should make playback smoother over poor connections
  • MSN track notifications have been added
  • The login view has been redesigned

Clickable Spotify URIs in Adium

Adium Logo

We love when things work together! In particular, we want Spotify to be able to work together with other applications, both on the desktop and on the web.

One way we try to realize this goal, is to give every artist, album, track, playlist and search string in Spotify its very own URI. A URI is a unique text string that is used to identify something on the internet. The most common type of URI is http, for web addresses, like http://www.spotify.com/, but there are many others, like mailto for email addresses.

To get the URI of something in Spotify, right-click on it and select “Copy Spotify URI”. You can then put it in a blog post, an email, a chat message, or anywhere else you want. Anyone can then take the URI and paste it into the search field in Spotify.

Things get even better if you’re using the new version of Adium, the popular chat application for Mac OS X, which has built-in support for Spotify URIs. That means that if someone sends you a Spotify URI, it will turn into a link that you can click on, saving you the hassle of copying and pasting.

In the long run, we’d like the spotify URI type to be the way to link to music, and be supported everywhere, and this is a great first baby step towards that goal.

A big thanks to the Adium developers, and to our own Rasmus Andersson, who contributed the crucial piece of code.
