Spotify 0.3.0

Screenshot of Spotify 0.3.0We have just released a version of Spotify with an entirely new streaming protocol. This will allow us to build an efficient distribution system that we can scale to a much larger number of users, eventually letting you share Spotify with all your friends. While introducing the new streaming protocol, we have also switched to the Ogg Vorbis codec, giving you higher-quality music without using more bandwidth.

This is a big step for us, but since this is relatively untested code, please bear with us (and let us know!) if there are any issues, such as increased latency, missing songs or lost connections.

There is also a few visible changes:

  • We have turned off fuzzy matching when searching, and instead suggest alternative spellings if your search query didn’t return any results
  • Links to iTunes have been added for some tracks and albums. Through the context menu it is easy to buy your favourite tracks from the iTunes Store
  • The dashes that appear in automatically generated playlist names have been replaced by the typographically more correct en dashes
  • A bug that caused Spotify to crash when trying to play empty playlists has been fixed

The new version doesn’t seem to be available yet… or maybe the .exe I’m downloading is cached somewhere on the way…

Whatever version you download, it should auto-update to the latest version.

The keyword here is “should”, as mine doesn’t auto-update. I get an error message saying:

“Update failed. Please download the latest version from the Spotify webpage.”

…and it doesn’t seem to be the latest version. :) I’m on vacation in a place where I don’t have control over my internet connection, so maybe the auto-update fails because of blocked internet access?

Thanks for any help and keep up the great work!

I’ve been using the new client today over our somewhat dodgy VPN and am having a poor listening experience. 1 second of music, 1 second of stutter. It is not listenable. I don’t use the VPN too often so I can’t say whether or not this is a regression. I see that spotify writes all sorts of streaming info to the system.log. I can forward that info if you think it’d be helpful.

I’m sorry to hear that. Please send your logs to support@spotify.com! It’s much appreciated.

is just me or does the sound via spotify sound more hollow now with the switch to ogg vorbis? - i tried playing “Radiohead - Reckoner” first in itunes, and then in spotify and notice a big difference.
